When is Songkran 2017 Taking Place this Year?

It’s nearly that time of the year again! Get ready to be drenched in water and white powdery substances in the name of celebration in April. The Songkran 2017 Water Festival is the official name for Thai New Year and one of the most important dates in the Thai calendar. A question we get asked is when is Songkran 2017 taking place this year, and with so many different dates depending on where you are in Thailand, it can be quite confusing.

Fundamentally a water festival, Songkran, depending on where you are situated in Thailand, could last from 1 day to 2 weeks from April 13 onwards. In Phuket, Songkran only lasts 24 hours on the 13th, which is really great because you can have some fun and then get back to normality quite quickly.

Songkran 2017 in Pattaya

In places such as Pattaya, the festival can take a full week to unfold from the 13th April to the 19th, with the main festival changing locations across the Pattaya region every day. Chiang Mai is another place where Songkran 2017 will last up to a week.

If you are in Thailand during Songkran 2017, you can expect to see the biggest water fight anywhere in the world. There will be water cannons aplenty, so we would recommend that you arm yourself appropriately and join in on the fun. You simply cannot stay dry over Songkran unless you remain in your hotel room for a full 24-hours, which some people do!

Things to remember during Songkran 2017

– Leave all valuables at your hotel, or secure them in a waterproof bag, because every square inch of your body will get wet.

– Try not to drive a vehicle during the festival, especially a motorbike, because the roads can be quite treacherous, so please be safe.

– If you don’t want to partake in the biggest water fight in the world, stay within the grounds of your hotel and resort for 24-hours, but make sure you have stocked up on supplies to get you through.

– Have fun. Songkran could well be one of the most memorable experiences in your life, so savor the moment because who knows when you will be back in Phuket again at this time of the year.
